Gate of Hell

This is a real-time prop made using Unreal Engine 5. It is an original concept exploring a dark fantasy asset in an exterior environment. The project allowed me to explore fantasy architecture design for the game development pipeline.

The design style was inspired by Zdzisław Beksiński.

This project was created using: Houdini, ZBrush, Maya, Substance Designer, Substance Painter, Gaea, Unreal Engine, Affinity Photo, and After Effects.

Responsible for all aspects.

Breakdowns

The most challenging part of this project was to simulate physics and wind force. Unlike Houdini, interactive real-time physics cannot be cached in Unreal unless it's used for a very specific purpose. To resolve this difficulty, I not only ran many tests on Unreal's native physics system but also learned how to use Chaos Cloth for the very first time.

Lighting is a skill I've been working hard to develop, and I find it very rewarding to create unique moods instead of looking the same as most other UE5 projects available online. For this project, I specifically used Zdzisław Beksiński's artworks as lighting references and developed my own sense on top of them.

Asset Library

Here is the render of the assets used to create the environment.

All models were designed by myself.

Wireframes

Here's a beauty shot of my hero prop with wireframes.

Techniques

Here are some technical breakdowns of my approach towards the project.
